‘Buitenste binnenkamer voor andersoortig rendement, 2013
site-specific installation at Middle Gate Geel '13 (curator Jan Hoet)
wood, paint, photocopied drawings, disco light globe, 9 micro music systems

An installation fills the carriage house in the garden of the birth house of Jan Hoet. The wooden construction has a dark tunnel-entrance along the door but also pinches itself brutally out along the gate. About 400 black/white drawings - mainly self-portraits - hang inside on the black walls, illuminated by a Magic Crystal Ball, a fast rotating disco-globe. 9 micro music systems emit a chaotic sound (music and fragments of poetry recorded by the artist during workshops with psychiatric patients). Counterpoint of the hallucinating abundance of visual and auditory impulses is an even darker space with a strange voodoo-like sculpture, where the visitor might be confronted with himself. Freely translated the dutch title means outer inner room for another kind of return.

‘7 HOLES', 2013
unique work
250 x 867 cm
BOOMKLEVER Spaan beton
GROTE BONTE SPECHT OSB/3 gesch.
KUIFMEES Betontriplex
SPREEUW WBP Lauan
GLORY HOLE WBP construction
HUISMUS Spaan
PIMPELMEES Spaanmelamine wit

The original idea was first executed in a glass plate in 2006 for an exhibition curated by Luk Lambrecht.
A hole suggests dark depts, the experience of loss, the void, a descent into the unknown or the subconscious. To dream of a hole would signify the anxiety to discover hidden feelings. A hole can also be regarded as the entrance to a hiding place, a safe shelter or a possibility to escape, but above all a hole will always be related to a sexual obsession with human orifices. Definitively it is the diameter of the hole that will most accurately determine which bird finds the house attractive.
The work found its final shape in a series of seven different but standard-size, wooden boards.
One for every day of the week.

'To Retitle An Object Daily During the Course Of A Show', 2013
acquired by MuHKA, Antwerpen (BE)

Vaast Colson ties an object to a statue, and gives it a different title every day for the duration of one month. This is the third installment of a work that already has two previous versions. In the first version, Vaast Colson opted for using a banal object; a bucket. For the second version, he chose an object of his desire; a bass guitar.

For the third version, he wants to use an object that has been chosen by the client, and which he then works on for one month, visiting the object every day to give it a different title. M HKA chooses Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse bids welcome and alludes to the ambiguity of what it means to be tied to a pole. The statue being part of the Vrielynck collection is an asset; this collection is literally tied to our architecture and thus also to the notion of visual culture as a broader question for M HKA. unique work
photographic print on paper, wood, metal
212 x 122 cm

The original entrance of the 'OFF THE WALL' exhibition is being used as a classic oval passe-partout for the photograph of a painted image of a bat. During this painting-action the artist, hung upside-down, was fired at by a confetti cannon. The backside of the rest-shape displays press articles from this first solo show in 2001. This two dimensional wall-piece depicts a highly condensed idea of the once huge, temporary gallery.

unique work
mixed media
130 x 90 x 81 cm

A monument built by means of an open participation, characterized by exchanging goods. The base is a piece of furniture -a singular family piece- built in 1983 with a lot of craftmanship by the late Arthur Aerts to express his friendship to the family Decaigny, brewers and textile cleaners. The furniture functions as a 'secretaire' but is also accommodated to play and record music.
This work includes a pile of flyers with following text :
A kind invitation to send any Roy Orbison recording on LP, single, cd or cassette. In return you will receive a drawing of the Big O, produced on the Roy Sculpture. The title you sent will be added to complete the sculpture. Consequently the work reveals it's active character for several years.

A career always has ups and downs influenced by unforeseen, external factors like the market, hypes, relations and promotion. A catalogue can give an overview but also seals a period. 'Widu Gasti' (celtic for knight Vaast), the tragic character from 'Off The Wall' , Colson's first soloshow in 2001 appears again after a decade. A photo report demonstrates he is still wandering around in the woods and did not surrender.

limited edition of 75 copies, signed and numbered
clean press #05 (edited by clean press and Maes & Matthys Gallery)
250 euro

'Daily Sleepdrunken Lists' is a systematic work that Vaast Colson completed within a specific time-frame. From 21st June 2007 to 20th June 2008 his first task each day was to quickly and intuitively fill in an alphabetical list. A habitual action which soon became an unexceptional part of the morning ritual, on the same level as filling a glass of water, but which did require time at the most delicate moment of the day. The aim was not to create a work conspicuous for its long duration, but to intensify the factor of time as part of the visual work and to give himself a task that confronts the unseen, routine aspect of being an artist. The work of art is reduced to a matter of discipline, because there is only one single passion: living for 365 days, giving substance to these days, remaining alert and in the process leaving a trace of oneself. The result is a structured, encyclopaedic work in which minimal variations appear, influenced by the geographical location, personal mood and physical condition.
